Stairway To Heaven

“No!” you bolt upright in bed shaking with tears on your cheeks. You wipe at your eyes with your hands then slip out of your bed. You were 13 and it had been three months since your father had died in a car crash, since then you’d been having nightmares and everything in your family had gone to hell. Your oldest brothers, Michael and Lucifer had been fighting more than usual and your other siblings just encouraged them, choosing sides, except for Gabriel who had left to go to a summer camp. You had been there the night the crash happened, you had gone with Michael even though he told you not to. Your dad hadn’t had much to do with you and the youngest kids but he was still your dad and the sight of his body covered in blood and the twisted metal of the car- you use a wet washcloth to wipe off your face before slipping out into the hallway.

You pad quietly down the hall until you reach the room you’re looking for, knocking softly before opening it a crack. “Lucifer?” you ask, voice seeming loud in the quiet of the night. “(Y/N)?” a sleepy voice asks and you can just make out Lucifer’s form on the bed. A lamp comes on beside the queen sized bed. Lucifer’s room was large, with a couch against one wall, his bed in the center and a bathroom attached. The walls and furnishings were black and red with silver and gray accessories.

Lucifer himself was 17, and 6 foot tall with sharp blue eyes like ice and dark blond hair, currently mussed with sleep.  You’d always been closer to him than your other siblings though you weren’t sure why. Maybe it was because he took time to help you with things, not like homework which you could get help with from anyone, but with your artwork and sketches. Things no one else ever had time for. Or maybe it was because you, unlike your other siblings, didn’t follow your father’s setting. A strong position in the church, singers of gospels and always doing exactly as you were told, it wasn’t for you.

He sits up fully and you step inside the room, shutting the door behind you “I couldn’t sleep.” You say guiltily, you hadn’t wanted to wake him up. He gives you a soft smile, the lamp casting soft shadows over his face and the black comforter “The accident?” he asks noting your red eyes. You nod, climbing onto the bed beside him as he moves to the center to give you room.
“I’m sorry I woke you up.” You whisper and he shakes his head “Its ok, I haven’t been laying down long.” He holds up the comforter and maroon sheets letting you slide under them with him out of the cold room. Somehow even in summer Lucifer’s room stayed cold, you never minded though taking a kind of comfort in the strange anomaly.

He places his arm around you pulling you down against the pillows comfortably and letting you rest your head on his shoulder. He starts humming after a few minutes of silence but you can’t place the song at first. Then he starts singing.

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh, ooh, and she's buying a stairway to heaven.

His voice is low and slightly rough but clear, calming, and utterly beautiful. You close your eyes letting the song calm you but open them again quickly as your mind pictures that night and he pauses before continuing.

There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.
In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.

He reaches over and clicks the lamp off, so that the only light in the room comes from the moon outside the window and the dim glow of the radio’s clock across the room.

Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it makes me wonder.

You let your eyes adjust slowly, glancing up at him, only able to make out his outline against the darkness at first. As your eyes adjust further however you see his eyes, emotions swirling within them you aren’t used to seeing.

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west,
And my spirit is crying for leaving.
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees,
And the voices of those who stand looking.

Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it really makes me wonder.

You wonder briefly why Lucifer never sung before now. You think that maybe there was a time when you were little, maybe six or seven you may have heard him singing but you weren’t sure, that was before… everything got bad between him and Michael.

And it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune,
Then the piper will lead us to reason.

Shadows flicker across the window as you relax against your brother focusing on his voice alone and nothing else. Not the past and the ghosts it held or the future which promised more pain than it was worth it seemed to you sometimes.

And a new day will dawn for those who stand long,
And the forests will echo with laughter.

He pulls the sheets up over your shoulders and you feel your eyes growing heavy. You fight the feeling knowing you would never stay asleep if you did. Coming to your brother after a nightmare was one thing, having him be there during one was different.

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now,
It's just a spring clean for the May queen.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on.
And it makes me wonder.

You turn over so that your head is tucked into the hollow of his shoulder.

Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know,
The piper's calling you to join him,
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind?

Your eyes drift closed against your will and your breathing starts to slow down and he stops thinking you had gone to sleep. “Keep going.” You murmur against the soft cotton of his shirt and the cool skin beneath it.

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold.

He sings the lyrics softer than the original song his eyes watching you in the silver light of the moon.

And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll.

You finally fall asleep but he finishes the last line softly

And she's buying a stairway to heaven.

He strokes a hand over your hair pressing a kiss to the top of your head. “Good night (Y/N).”
